Discover the top, most popular movies available now! Across theaters, streaming, and on-demand, these are the movies Rotten Tomatoes users are checking out at this very moment, including Shazam! Fury of the Gods (see DCEU movies ranked), John Wick: Chapter 4, and A Good Person (starring Florence Pugh).
More major movie movers this week include 2019 Helen Hunt horror I See You (being re-discovered on Netflix right now, along with Dragged Across Concrete), new Stephen Frears film The Lost King, and the rest of the John Wick movies.
The John Wick movies have always been deceptively funny, finding unlikely moments to deploy a well-placed blunt joke or embrace of the absurd for a laugh. The nonplused horror of Viggo and his men in John Wick, John's shopping trip in John Wick: Chapter 2, and the absurd kills of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum all disarmed the intensity surrounding within the rest of the film, all while slipping in some levity to lighten the fairly murder-heavy movies up a bit.
But none of them compare to the best joke in the entire series and one of the most well-executed gags in recent film. In the middle of an intense slew of skirmishes on the way to the final duel in John Wick: Chapter 4, one of the film's most dangerous villains ends up literally throwing John down a flight of stairs -- and it is hilarious. Coming in the middle of an otherwise intense chunk of the film, the staircase moment is one of the most surprising and effective laughs of any movie in recent memory, all while expertly moving the film along and teasing its ending.
From impromptu sing-songs in otherwise horrific scenes, to insane final montages, nauseatingly brutal deaths, hilarious cameos, and everything in-between, these are some of the most disarmingly deranged movie moments of recent times - if not ever.
Depp's most recent major motion picture, Minamata, has now been formally released on DVD and streaming as he gets ready for another court case. Depp released a small video of his transformation process to commemorate the occasion.
The Samuel Goldwyn Films-distributed movie Minamata is available on Hulu. Given that it's the first movie starring the Pirates of the Caribbean star to be released in a while, it's not unreasonable to assume that a sizable number of people may be interested in checking it out. Of course, at this point, the idea of how it will be received on the streamer is pure conjecture.
Many people at the time seemed to be ignorant of the studio's choice because they thought the movie bombed because of how little money it made that weekend. The movie finally hit theaters this past February and earned a pitiful $1.7 million during its run.
The Greatest Showman also saw success off the big screen in the form of music streams. Most notably, "Rewrite the Stars," sung by Efron and Zendaya, and "This is Me," sung by Settle, became the standout tracks from the movie. "This is Me" was nominated for several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2018. Though it didn't win, it still remains popular among musical fans and those who loved the movie. If you're looking for a larger than life, romantic watch, The Greatest Showman is a perfect choice.
Dear Evan Hansen features a beautiful and poignant track list, with songs like "Waving Through a Window" and is a heartwarming movie for everyone, especially teens and young adults, who may find they can directly relate to the concept and characters. Admittedly, Dear Evan Hansen is one of those movie musicals that aren't as good as the original source material. The movie received generally negative reviews from critics, but was well-received among general audience members and has maintained a certain level of popularity despite its negative critiques.
This musical drama is based on the stage performance of the same name by Quiara Alegria Hudes and Lin Manuel Miranda (Hamilton). Released in 2021, In the Heights is about the community in the predominantly Dominican Washington Heights neighborhood in New York City. The movie follows members of the community as they work to pursue their dreams for a better life.
In the Heights is a vibrant celebration of culture, community, love, and perseverance. It captures the beauty and vitality of a neighborhood full of unique heritage and brings its characters stories to life through the use of rhythmic, catchy songs. This is a great example of adapting a stage performance into a movie the right way. The movie version of In the Heights still captures all the necessary essence of the stage version and simultaneously breathes new life into the musical movie genre.
West Side Story is complete with stunning dance routines and iconic songs that have become crucial parts of musical theatre history. The remake of this Romeo and Juliet-inspired work is just as good as the original, and in some cases you may even say it's better. For one, Spielberg's version aimed to repair the portrayal of the Puerto Rican community that the original movie tarnished. Also, the cinematography in the 2021 movie is showstopping and truly beautiful to watch. The re-imagined West Side Story is a total knockout and fans of the original will have no problem coming to love it, which is really the true indicator of a successful remake.
Tick, Tick..Boom! is a tear-jerking, raw look at the creative process. While at times it's gut-wrenching and sad, it's also vibrant and beautiful, in a way serving as a tribute to Larson's work. Tick, Tick...Boom! was wildly well-received and its accessibility on Netflix added to its success. Tick, Tick...Boom! was released at a time when movie musicals were seemingly popping up around every corner, but it stands out as one of the best. It grips you from start to finish and is really a masterclass in artful storytelling.
Yet practical effects can also be employed to create visually breathtaking shots that inspire and impress. Following the renowned examples in films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Star Wars trilogy, these recent instances of practical effects attest to their lasting influence in cinema and storytelling.
Before big-budget action movies started delving into underwater shots, Guillermo del Toro set the bar with his opening scene from The Shape of Water. Preceding his work in Pinocchio, del Toro captures the eerie weightlessness of submerged objects using puppeteers to control the movement of every prop.
Nobody can predict which movies are going to be hits. While there are always factors that help a film's chances (such as being part of a pre-established franchise such as the MCU), other successes seemingly come out of nowhere, such as the recent massive financial haul for Top Gun: Maverick. Studios try their best to green-light movies they think provide the best chance of positive box office results, but sometimes it does not go to plan.
While films may fail at the box office, that does not stop them from being successful. There are countless tales of movies flopping in theaters before finding an adoring fan base in the years that follow. Cult classic movies tend to attract some of the most hardcore fans, especially in the horror genre, and they regularly shout about their favorite film's qualities online. It can be just as impossible to predict which films will attract this kind of audience, but the following films seem ripe to become modern cult classic movies that will still be discussed decades from now.
Each new year produces countless movies that are ignored by mainstream audiences but strike a chord with a small but devoted crowd. These movies often become cult classics and in 2022, no movie was as popular with the independent scene as Pearl. Hailed by genre fans as a masterpiece, Pearl is a showcase for a brilliant performance from Mia Goth, one that many believe was snubbed by the Oscars due to their dislike of the horror genre.
While Gunpowder Milkshake delivers the thrilling action fans expect, its main appeal is to see its stacked cast of leading ladies kick butt. Bassett and Yeoh recently delivered Oscar-worthy performances in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Everything Everywhere All At Once, and it is a delight to see them both savagely take down bad guys.
Malignant is a throwback to the horror movies of the 70s and 80s, where subtlety was thrown out the window and larger-than-life villains sliced through their victims like paper. It is a perfect midnight movie and is destined to join the leagues of new cult movies courtesy of its insane final act.
Infamous even before its release due to its subject matter and young cast, Good Boys seemingly came and went with little fanfare. Despite solid reviews, the film has rarely been discussed since release, but Good Boys is too entertaining to stay forgotten for long and is sure to join the ranks of new cult classic movies in the near future.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All), Suspiria was a failure at the box office and polarized both fans and critics. No one can argue the harsh beauty of the film, however, and its status as one of the most beautiful-looking horror movies in years has helped it find an audience since its release.
Nicolas Cage is the king of cult movies, often elevating lackluster projects thanks to his unhinged performances. Pig sees Cage at his most nuanced and vulnerable, playing Robin, a truffle hunter living in the woods who must venture into the city he left behind after his beloved pig is kidnaped.
While the synopsis brings John Wick to mind, Pig is a slow-moving drama concerned with exploring its complicated characters. Despite receiving critical acclaim, Pig was one of 2021's most overlooked movies, but this powerful story featuring one of the beloved actor's best performances should be remembered for a long time. 781b155fdc
